On this day in music history: April 7, 1978 - “For You”, the debut album by Prince is released. Produced by Prince, it is recorded at The Record Plant in Sausalito, CA from October - December 1977. Signed to Warner Bros Records in 1977, the label will be the only one of several clamoring to sign the then nineteen year old musician, willing to allow him to produce himself and give him full creative control. Though the label will ask recording engineer and executive producer Tommy Vicari (George Duke) to keep close watch over the sessions. The album will be a virtual “one man show”, with Prince playing all of the instruments and singing all of the vocals on his first album. He will also run way over budget during the sessions, spending more than double the amount of money advanced to him by Warner Bros. Though only a modest success upon its release, it will spin off two singles including “Soft And Wet” (#12 R&B, #92 Pop) and “Just As Long As We’re Together” (#91 R&B). “For You” will peak at #21 on the Billboard R&B album chart, and #163 on the Top 200.

I made this fleece Mr. T doll for Jibbart Jabbart: A Mr. T-Themed Art Show and Experience at PhilaMOCA in December. PhilaMOCA is a really unique and fun gallery/venue in Philadelphia. It used to be a mausoleum, and still looks just like one from the outside. Lots of grey columns, and no sign telling you if you’re in the right place. Seriously, when I dropped him off, I just opened a door and hoped for the best.
I pretty much love how he turned out (except his tiny baby legs - I wish I’d made those larger). His entire body and face were made with fleece, and his hair and facial hair are wool felt. His little jean shorts used to be a pair of my jeans. He is about 16” tall.
I really wanted to get the details right. I spent a lot of time looking at pictures of the real Mr. T, and I read a bit about his life. I’ve always thought he is a very cool person, and it was fun making a tiny T.
